Sulaimaniya, March 1 (AKnews)- A representative for Sulaimaniya protesters said the anti-government campaigners give 48 hour respite to the Kurdistan Regional government to respond officially to their demands or they will stage a general strike in Sulaimaniya city, 346 km northeast of Baghdad.

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq: Northern Iraq’s Ninewa Province’s Governor, Athil al-Nujeify, [National List "Al-Hadbaa", part or Iraqiya J.G.] has charged the Commander of Iraq’s 2nd Army Division, with having been behind attacks against demonstrators, whilst the latter denied the charge, but admitted that some of his guards had opened fire on the demonstrators.
 
“We accuse the 2nd Army Division of having been behind the attacks that caused the burning of the Ninewa Province’s building,” Nujeify told Aswat al-Iraq news agency on Saturday night, charging that the incident had been intentional.

ANBAR / Aswat al-Iraq: A complete curfew has been imposed on all cities of west Iraq’s Anbar Province on Saturday, a security source said.

“The security forces have imposed a complete curfew on all cities of Anbar Province, in prelude to violence acts, that may target civilians, in order to protect government installations, offices and civilian properties,” he told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Anbar Province had witnessed broad mass demonstrations on Friday, followed by the resignation of the mayor of its Falluja city, chairman of its Council and its members, as well as the Chairman of Habaniya city’s Chairman and its Council members.

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: The Iraqi Society for the Defense of Press Freedoms have condemned the detention of journalists, who covered the  Baghdad demonstrations on Friday, considering the 25th of February as a “bad” day for the freedom of press and democracy in Iraq.
“We strongly condemn the detentions and aggressive acts against dozens of journalists and media workers in different parts of Iraq,” a Society statement said on Saturday.

It said that “Al-Diyar TV Channel had been attacked by a military force, who detained 7 of its members and stopped its transmission, because it carried reports about the demonstrations in Baghdad’s al-Tahrir Square and some other provinces.

“Iraqi Army forces have detained dozens of journalists and beating them in al-Tahrir Square, including Mazin al-Zubeidy, Khuloud al-Nassiry and Sattar al-Haj, who are members of the Society for the Defense of Press Freedom, whilst they confiscated their mobile phones, cameras and equipment, the statement said.

SALAHADDIN / Aswat al-Iraq: Two demonstrators, wounded in a dmonstration that took place in Tikrit city, the center of Salahaddin Province, on Friday, have died on Sturday, whilst hundreds of the nearby village of Yathrib of Balad township, have demonstrated, demanding the resignation of the Iraqi government and fighting corruption, according to a security source.

"Two out of four demonstrators, wounded during a demonstration in Tikrit city on Friday, have died, whilst hundreds of the village of Yathrib of Balad township, went to the streets on Saturday, demanding the resignation of the Iraqi government and fighting corruption," the security source said.

Noteworthy is that Salahaddin Province had witnessed broad mass demonstrations on Friday, during which four civilians were injured, following clashes and exchange of fire between  the demonstrators and the security forces.

Meanwhile, the same source said that "a dmonstration by hundreds of Yathrib village of Balad Township, took to the streets of Balad on Saturday, demanding the resignation of the Iraqi government and fighting corruption, despite the curfew imposed on the city.

Aswat al-Iraq's correspondent had reported on Saturday that the movement had been completely hampered, whilst full security measures was imposed on Tikrit and citizens living in remote areas have failed to reach their offices, due to the curfew imposed on the Province.

Tikrit, the center of Salahaddin Province, is 175 kms to the north of Baghdad.

Reporter of Yaqen News Agency obtained a photo of martyr who was killed at the hand of puppet government forces in Hawija district of Kirkuk on Friday. According to the reporter, Fallah Ali Khubaib was martyred along with  two other innocent civilians who participated in protest meetings called "Outrage of the People" on Friday. Reporter added that crowd gathered in front of police directorate in the district demanding for handing over the policeman who openly shot fire at the peaceful crowd.

Basra council holds emergency meeting amid reports of governor's resignation

Basra, Feb. 24 (AKnews) – Iraqi MPs from Basra province are in an emergency meeting with the Basra provincial council to tackle the demands of demonstrators amid reports that the governor has stepped down.

“Uday Kadhm Awwad has called for an emergency meeting with the Basra MPs and provincial council members which may result in dismissing the governor” says activist Amer al-Rubai’I who is one of the demonstrators. There reports earlier that the governor Sheltagh Abboud has stepped down.

The representatives of the demonstrators have handed over a communiqué that contains the demands of the people for public services and political reforms, says al-Rubai’I, “but before anything, they are demanding the resignation of the governor”

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Seven policemen and two civilians were wounded in mass protests in al-Tahrir Square in central Baghdad on Friday, according to the Baghdad Operations Command.

“Demonstrators hurled stones at policemen in al-Tahrir Square, central Baghdad, today (Feb.
25), leaving seven wounded,” the semi-official al-Iraqiya TV quoted the BOC in a statement.

“Two civilian protesters were also wounded, in the incidents,” he added.

KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq: Clashes in Kirkuk on Friday left 23 policemen and a correspondent for a Kurdish TV channel wounded, according to a medic in the northern Iraq city.

“Twenty-three policemen were wounded when protesters pelted stones at them during demonstrations in the city,” the medic, who is at the Kirkuk Public Hospital, told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“A correspondent for a Kurdish TV channel was also wounded in the incidents,” he added.

The oil-rich Kirkuk, a city of mixed Arab, Kurdish and Turkmen population, lies 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq: The final count of casualties resulting from Friday’s demonstrations in Mosul city is five deaths and 15 wounded, according to a local security source in Ninewa.

“Clashes that followed demonstrations off the Ninewa provincial building on Friday left five people killed and 15 others wounded,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The injuries were the result of shooting, shrapnel and stun bombs,” he added, not giving further details.

Mosul, the capital city of the violence-ridden multi-ethnic province of Ninewa, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.

BASRA / Aswat al-Iraq: Thirty-nine policemen were wounded in protests in Basra on Friday as security officials announced a curfew in the southern Iraq province until 06:00 a.m.
Saturday, a police source said.

“The Basra Operations Command announced a curfew starting from 04:00 p.m.
Friday until 06:00 a.m.
Saturday,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The tally of wounded policemen in today’s demonstrations reached 39,” he added.

The oil-rich port city of Basra, Iraq’s only outlet to waterways, lies 590 km south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Puppet Forces Martyr Five Civilians in Falluja

Puppet government forces shot indiscriminately at the peaceful crowd who have taken the streets on Friday in Mosul City. According to the initial reports, at least five citizens were martyred and 15 others were wounded. Most of the wounded people were subjected to live ammunition, shrapnel and shock bombs. On the other hands, puppet government forces also targeted civilians who took part in the meetings in Khalidiyah district of western Falluaja city following Jumaa prayer.

ANBAR / Aswat al-Iraq: Sixteen demonstrators in al-Falluja were wounded in a random shooting by security forces after they stormed a government compound in the city, an informed source said.

“A number of protesters raided the compound, that includes the mayoralty and the local council, and set their content ablaze,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“Security forces opened fire randomly at the protesters, leaving 16 wounded,” he added.

Falluja, the largest city in the troubled predominantly Sunni province of al-Anbar, lies 45 km northwest of Baghdad.

Nineveh, Feb. 25 (AKnews) – A rally of protesters stormed the local government building in Nineveh province Friday setting fire on the building in protest of lack of basic services.

The demonstrators took to the streets Friday morning and called for the reformation of the local and federal government as well. Some 5 demonstrators have been killed and 18 others injured when security force opened fire on the demonstrators.
According to the Salam Hospital in Mosul, five of the wounded are women.

“A mass of demonstrators stormed the government building in Mosul city and set it on fire” said an officer of the Nineveh Operations Mohammed al-Jubbouri, “obliging the security forces to fire live ammunition at
the protesters”

Iraqi university students are pursuing their protests against neglect and lack of basic services in their colleges.

Their anger pushed them to take part in massive rallies arranged for Friday February 25.

University professors encouraged their students to take to the streets yet in peaceful demonstrations. Others however expect Iraq protests to turn into violence.

Some students on the other hand prefer not to take part in protests fearing the government’s reaction. These students called on the government not to use force against protesters.

Anticipation is growing ahead of February 25 rally after a wave of demonstrations swept into Iraq which some remained peaceful while others escalated into violence like the protests in Kut and Sulaymaniya.

Maliki: Former regime supporters leading Iraq protests

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki warned that the present situation in Iraq might reach an irremediable point.

Al Maliki cautioned explicitly of those cashing in on people’s suffering to disrupt the political process in upcoming protests. He rebuked some websites used by supporters of the former regime to hail the former era pointing out that these parties are the ones leading demonstrations.

In a meeting with Basra tribal leaders, Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki urged them not to let tribes engage in fomenting tension.

Al Maliki vowed to end the electricity crisis within a year and a half adding that the present budget offers many job opportunities. He pledged as well to improve the ration card system.

14 people wounded in Thi-Qar protests

THI-QAR / Aswat al-Iraq: A total of fourteen people were wounded in the protests staged in Thi-Qar province on Wednesday, according to a security source.

"Fourteen people, including an army colonel and a police brigadier, in the protests staged in Thi-Qar," the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

"The protestors called for dismissing the municipality council, better services and offering job opportunities," the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Scores of protestors went to the street in Thi-Qar, according to a close source, but it turned later to clashes between protestors and anti-riot forces.

Iraqi forces raid journalists' office overnight

BAGHDAD – Gunmen raided the office of an Iraqi journalists' organization Wednesday, taking equipment such as flak jackets, laptops and video cameras, the director of the Baghdad-based independent group said.
The men wore black, military-style uniforms, said Ziyad al-Ajili, head of the Journalistic Freedoms Observatory, adding that he did not know where they were from. A Baghdad military spokesman told The Associated Press that the men were part of the Iraqi army; he gave few other details. [...]
He said the group called the top military spokesman in Baghdad, Qassim al-Moussawi, and were told that he had no information about the incident. But when contacted by the AP, al-Moussawi said the raid was carried out by the Iraqi army, which had information that "a company operating without a license" was in the building.

Al Maliki warns against plots to target Iraq protestors

Iraqi Government’s concern over mounting protests around Iraq was clearly sensed in the meeting between Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki and a number of media representatives.

In anticipation to probable incidents during upcoming rallies, Al Maliki cautioned about intelligence saying that some people disguised military uniforms plan to target protesters.

Al Maliki on the other hand affirmed that the rights of demonstrators are protected as long as they don’t resort to riot.

Prime Minister Al Maliki urged Iraq’s media to cover the news from a faithful, responsible and impartial perspective.

Al Maliki’s statements coincide with Iraqis’ preparations to take to the streets on February 25 in massive rallies that might the first since the era of leader Abdul Karim Qassem till the day.

Lawyers lead anti-government protest in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, (AP) – Iraqi lawyers called for the end of judicial corruption and prisoner abuse in a protest Thursday that was one of the biggest anti-government demonstrations in Iraq since the start of popular uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia.
Dressed in the black cloaks they wear in court, Iraqi attorneys led a peaceful crowd of about 3,000 through a Sunni Muslim neighborhood in western Baghdad ....
Lawyers in the cities of Basra and Mosul also held similar but smaller demonstrations, demanding better jobs and electricity services in Iraqi homes.
"This is in solidarity with the Iraqi people," said Kadhim al-Zubaidi, spokesman for Iraq's lawyers' union in Baghdad. "We want the government to sack the corrupt judges."
